5 Questions to Ask Before Beginning Coaching

Think about getting a life coach

Want to get the most out of coaching? A little advanced preparation can go a long way!

Ultimately, a coach can help you sort through some of these questions if you are unsure, but if you begin sessions already having increased clarity due to considering these big five, you have an edge and can get a jumpstart on making progress!

1. Would I like help from the coach in defining my goal(s), or do I already have an idea of the goal(s) I want to achieve?

You may start coaching knowing exactly what you want to see change, or you may know something needs to change, but are unsure what exactly. If you can spend some time identifying the problem you are facing, this can go a long way in kickstarting your coaching process. Being as specific as you can is useful, though most coaches are also trained to help you explore the issue and come up with goals if you are struggling for clarity.

2. Am I ready to take steps to improve my life in this/these area(s)?

Wanting something to be different and being ready to change are actually two different steps, so it is helpful to understand where you are internally in this regard. You may want to make sure you are in a headspace where you are willing to try new solutions to your situation. It just might make all the difference!

3. Do I have the time and energy to commit to coaching at present?

Ideas for coaching - check. Desire to try new solutions - check. Now it’s time to consider if you have enough space in your life to make coaching a priority. As coaching is for a period of time, it is important that you are able to give it attention. The more you put into it, the more you can get out of it. Why not maximize the investment?

4. Have I found a coach I feel safe with and trust?

The connection you feel with your coach is very important to the coaching process and impacts a successful outcome. Fortunately for you, this coach has a prior background as a therapist, and so prioritizes authentic listening and a trusting relationship as the springboard for change and growth.

5. How might my life improve by working with a coach to clarify and/or attain my goal(s)?

Imagine the possibilities! Really picture them happening. Things like:

  • No more imposter syndrome - improved self confidence.

  • Greater success at your job.

  • Living a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

  • Communicating effectively with the people that matter to you.

  • Feeling a sense of purpose in life again.

Once you define what you want, a coach can help you reach it. Together.
