How to Identify Your Core Values
Your core values are the inner anchors that help you navigate life with clarity and intention. They shape your decisions, influence your relationships, and guide the way you navigate your world.
Yet most of us move through life without ever pausing to identify these inner anchors. When we don’t know what truly matters to us, it becomes easy to drift—pulled by cultural expectations, family pressures, or the priorities of others. Over time, that disconnect can leave us feeling unfulfilled or unsure of who we really are.
Identifying your core values is a powerful step toward living a life that feels aligned, grounded, and authentically yours.
6 Questions to Help You Discover Your Core Values
If you want to understand yourself and your priorities better, use these prompts as a starting point for reflection.
Don’t rush—let your answers unfold thoughtfully and honestly.
What do I genuinely care about?
Where do I invest most of my time, energy, and resources?
Who do I admire—and why?
How do I hope others would describe me?
What was I taught to view as important—and does that still feel true today?
When have I felt the greatest pride, contentment, or joy in my life?
A Simple Exercise to Clarify Your Top Values
Another helpful way to approach identifying your core values is to:
Write a list of words or phrases that describe you. Think about your strengths, your personality, and the qualities you bring into relationships, work, or other areas of your life. Put them on paper.
Circle the 3–5 qualities that feel most essential. These are often clues to your core values.
For example: If you describe yourself as curious, compassionate, resilient, honest, and creative, your core values might include growth, empathy, integrity, or self‑expression.
When you are clear on who you are and what you care about, it leads you to feeling more centered and allows other aspects of life to fall into place.
